Useful Tip - Making a Poo Pile

Creating Poo Piles When and Where you need them

When traveling to shows etc. I have started taking a small sample from the alpacas poo pile with me so that I can start a new poo pile wherever we end up. I have found that the animals will hold on all day (almost) in their pens, making them get agitated and uncomfortable. If I place the poo sample in the corner I want them to poo in – they instantly use it as the new poo pile.

This also works brilliantly if you want to stop them messing in your trailer while you are traveling.  We just stop at an appropriate place, take the alpacas out of the vehicle, put the poo sample on the ground, and voila.

  • Remember to pack your “pooper scooper” and a bag and clean up all of the mess before you leave, just like you would if you took your dog out to relieve itself.
  • Make sure all your halters are on properly and you have a good hold on them, it would be awful to hear of an alpaca that got away from you near a state highway and got hurt in some way.
  • Try and find a place where you can get completely off the road and out of sight of motorists, so the alpacas won’t jump at every vehicle that drives by and the motorists won’t have accidents admiring your beautiful animals as they drive past. We call it “rubber necking” here in New Zealand.
  • Always check the area for dogs or other animals that might try to hassle your alpacas before you take them out of the safety of your vehicle.
