Useful Tip - Sun Burn - Noses and Backsides
Bare Nose on Cria Every now and again we come across a cria that loses the hair on top of its nose. I have found that the lack of hair leaves the cria vulnerable to sunburn in that area. This is particularly a problem here in New Zealand as we have very thin Ozone patches over parts of the country making those areas more vulnerable to severe sunburn issues. Solution? Just like protecting children from sun burnt noses, try rubbing a Zinc cream onto the nose every couple of days until the hair grows back and provides the cria with the natural protection it needs. The Zinc cream is available from most farm supply retailers eg. Farmlands, RD1, PPG Wrightsons. There is a Zinc based cream with anti-bacterial qualities in it called Filta-bac which can be found at Equestrian supply stores or your local vet may have some. This is also good to use. I have used this cream on a variety of minor skin conditions with great success.
Sun Burned Backside We found that after shearing had been completed last year (2007), a couple of our mums had had a little too much taken off their rear ends which made them vulnerable to sun burn in that area. Solution? Rub some Zinc cream into the affected area every few days until the fleece can grow back providing natural protection against the harmful rays of the sun. The Zinc cream is available from most farm supplies retailers eg. Farmlands, RD1, PPG Wrightsons. There is a Zinc based cream with anti-bacterial qualities in it called Filta-bac which can be found at Equestrian supply stores or your local vet may have some. This is also good to use.
Prevention: Be careful when shearing the animals that you leave enough fleece on the animals rear ends to act as a natural protection from Sun Burn. Be particularly careful with leaving enough cover on the boys as Sun Burned genitals would be most unpleasant for them to endure.
